Theatre, Acting M.F.A.


The MFA degree program in Acting at UCF is a highly selective, rigorous, three-year professional training program emphasizing both practice and theory. The first two years consist of classes and productions on the UCF campus. The third year is an internship at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater or other approved venue.

The MFA degree is rooted in the belief that classroom studio and practical experience in the theatre are of equal and complementary value. The production program, therefore, is integrated into the curriculum because it is the principal means available for the coordination of all the elements of dramatic art. All possible ways are sought to use the production program effectively for the purpose of teaching and training.

The MFA in Acting at UCF is designed for students who demonstrate the artistic and intellectual capacity and evidence of professional promise to pursue careers in professional and academic theatre. Candidates, in addition to becoming highly trained theatre practitioners, must also demonstrate the ability to understand the conceptual basis of their art and to be able to articulate that understanding to others. Toward this end, the department will recruit and develop graduate students who can serve, along with faculty and staff, as role models for undergraduate students whose BFA programs of study are integrally connected and dependent.


Minimum requirements for admission are a B.A. or B.F.A. degree in Theatre or equivalent. An audition and interview are also required. Each student interested in the program must apply to UCF through the College of Graduate Studies before being considered a candidate.
Students applying for entrance into the M.F.A. program should have successfully completed the following undergraduate courses or their equivalent:

  • Script Analysis or Play Analysis
  • Theatre History and Dramatic Literature courses
  • Directing I

The theatre department requires applicants to participate in an audition as well as an interview.

Additional Application Information

  • The audition must include two contrasting 3-minute monologues (one classical), and at least 16 bars of a song (preferably more).
    Please do not sing a cappella: prepare to provide your own accompaniment via audio device.

UCF faculty will be present at the 2018 URTA Satellite auditions in New York City (January 19-22) and in Chicago (January 29-February 1). UCF Faculty will be present at graduate audition at SETC in Mobile, Alabama on March 9, 2018. Auditions will also be held in Orlando at Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, with a tour of the UCF campus on February 24, 2018.
