Mack McLaughlin graduated from UCF with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater in 1981 and is the CEO / Creative Director of FX Design Group.
FX has two primary divisions: Live Events and Broadcast, providing design for scenery, lighting, and motion graphics, as well as fabrication and installation. The Live Events division has provided services for many Fortune 500 companies including Pfizer, Glaxo Bayer, Astra Zenaca, AT&T, Sprint Nextel, IBM, Intel, HP, Ford, GM, Chrysler, American Express, UBS, KPMG, Avon, and Johnson & Johnson, as well as projects for museums and theme parks, including the lighting design and installation for Universal’s Mummy attraction in Singapore.
The Broadcast Division has provided award winning set and lighting designs for broadcast and cable seen across the country and the world—winning six Emmy Awards including KRON-TV in San Francisco and WXYZ in Detroit and five Broadcast Design Association Awards including WESH-TV in Orlando.
In addition to network projects for CNN Headline News and Fox News Channel, FX’s work can be seen internationally on Channel 2 in Israel, TVJ in Jamaica, and a recent launch for Caribbean New Media Group—C News—in Trinidad and CNN International in Abu Dhabi and Turkey. Locally, FX’s work can be seen on WESH, CFN 13, Fox 35, and WFTV.
Through its success and Mack’s guidance, FX has grown over the years from a handful of employees to thirty full-time employees supplemented by freelance craftsmen and designers when needed. Twenty percent of the FX staff has ties with UCF, including a number of talented UCF alumni. In 2002, FX was recognized in the Florida 100, the state’s fastest growing companies and in 2011 is celebrating its 25th Anniversary.
Mack has also been active in a number of UCF organizations, in addition to the Theatre Professional Advisory Board. He is currently a member of the UCF Alumni Association Board of Directors and has served as the Board President of the Golden Knights Club.
Mack has received two awards from the UCF Alumni Association including the “Service to UCF Award” in 2004 and in 2007, the College of Arts and Humanities’ “Professional Achievement Award.”
Mack has also been active in the local community and served as a Member of the Orange County Public School’s Concurrency Stakeholder committee and is a former member of the Rotary Club of SW Orlando where he was honored with the Cornelius Koele award for community service in 2001. Mack completed 3 terms as a member of the Orlando UCF Shakespeare Festival Board (secretary on the Executive Board 2004/05).
Mack is also active in professional associations and boards, serving as a member of the National Association of Broadcasters Exhibitor Board and with the Radio and Television News Directors Association and Broadcast Designers Association. Mack has been in demand as a speaker at the NAB and Promax/BDA conferences for the past two years, as a national expert on set and lighting design as well as an expert on the implications of converting to digital and high definition broadcasting.
